There is a particular grief in the moment autumn releases its last colour and the world goes quiet - no snow yet, just cold, the land stripped bare and waiting. It was in that in-between stillness, walking our usual creek trail with my three-year-old, that I found myself looking down instead of away; bare branches and spent beech leaves dancing in cold water, luminous in their smallness. This land doesn't ask to be witnessed, but it reveals itself completely to those who slow down long enough to listen.
