I keep thinking about the lost art of just showing up. My aunt would knock without calling ahead. My mom would put the kettle on. I'd hide on the stairs until she called me down to drink tea with them like a grownup, except with an extra spoon of sugar.

We don't do that anymore. We are too available and not available at all.

The branch in this painting presents itself as unwelcoming, but I took the photo anyway. I see what’s beyond it. The reflection is where the depth is. We showed up as we were back then. We didn't clean our houses. There was no hiding, just the vulnerability of being seen in all our facets.

I seek the company of water because it never hides.
